I totally agree.  NatGeo took advantage of the Hutterites’  good nature.  Typical TV to sell itself.
It made me very angry to see Nat Geo represent the Hutterites in this way.

How do you take advantage of the UNwilling. Looks to me like the clan wanted that hundred
grand and then when the higher leaders of the clan objected, they are trying to cover the hutts.

I watched a few episodes and thought it was interesting.  But I kept thinking, since when do Hutterites
want the outside world to see precisely how they live?  I thought it was supposed to be secret.  Thus,
do you believe what you saw, is it real, or staged for the money?

I have lived around these good people all my life and was saddened and frankly shocked at the
show, so much so that I stopped watching it.  This no more represents the Hutterites than any
reality TVrepresents the bigger society. NatGeo should be ashamed and the unsuspecting people at
King Ranch should foreget it and go back to their lives because what is done is done.  Fair
warning to anyone else dealing with people looking for ratings.

Why did the Hutterites agree to be filmed if they don’t like outsiders? It has been a very long time since TV shows
were a real depiction of life. TV producers want ratings and sponsor dollars,
and they abuse the ‘editorial privilege’ to death until the TV version resembles little of the real story.

Having spent some time at a Hutterite colony myself, I was shocked to learn that a colony would
actually volunteer to be filmed in exchange for money.  Having said that, I certainly don’t believe the
producer’s statements about denying staging mock events in order to increase viewership.  In NatGeo’s
word vs the Hutterites, I am more inclined to believe the latter.

Having been on an ABC Reality Show, which I thoroughly enjoyed, I know they edit every
nano-second of what is seen so that it hooks the viewer. They make no secret of taking poetic
license with each show.  They also have air-tight contracts that cover them that the subjects
being shot have to sign, dozens of pages of agreements.  Each person whose face is seen on the
screen has to sign ALL those pages and pages.  And if anyone tried to tell me they understood
everything they signed on those Reality contracts,  I’d call b.s.  During our time with the show
we were told when we could talk and when we had to clam up. We were not allowed to go out of our
hotel rooms except for meals and shooting, we couldn’t mention the real name of the show when we
were out in public and we couldn’t talk to the locals (We were in Chile). The naive Hutterites
didn’t have a chance. They don’t have a clue about all the TV shenanigans and NatGeo took
advantage. Believe me, they intended to take advantage.  For a great look into Hutterite life
get the book, ” My Hutterite Life”  by Lisa Marie Stahl.  They are precious people.

The younger generations want change.  Just look at the way kids leaving the feel bad churches are flocking to the
Progressive and positive Skull Chuch in Kalispell. And the Hutterite kid are no different. World change is in the air
and many will say it’s social media.

Many Montanans living east of the Rockies have a slightly different perception of Hutterites
than those in Western Montana do. I have lived in an area saturated by colonies for 38
years, and I know first hand to what extent Hutterites will go for money. The fact that they
sold themselves for $100,000 doesn’t surprise me. The elder men of the colonies are
pretty shrewd and extremely controlling, so I can’t imagine that they allowed that film crew
free rein without knowing what was going on. What I suspect happened is that they
exposed themselves a little too much and are now trying to save face to the world.
