Comments on: Lawmakers Told Stiffer DUI Laws Will be Costly

I was at the committee hearings today. Many of the proposals to improve DUI laws are not costly. In fact many of them will save dollars as well as lives. I especially appreciated Representative Howard’s comment about the cost to victims. Montanans pay for DUIs with loss of life, loss of health, and loss of property. We can pay to prevent, or pay to fix. We can restore lives or we can destroy lives. We all need to do our part to fix this horrific problem. We must have zero tolerance for drinking or using drugs and driving.

Why not take away the drinking privileges of repeat DUI offenders? Place a mark on their license much like the under 21 mark - move to a mandatory carding of all to purchase alcohol and stop them at the source, BEFORE they are too intoxicated to make the rational decision.
State funding? None. The offender pays for the new license. Benefit to the community? And to the quality of life of the offender? Priceless.

This DUI stuff is just one part of the problem. Yesterday driving up US 2 North past the Glacier Airport…....I was going 62 miles an hour. Looking in my mirror was a log truck (an old truck) loaded headed for Plum Creek. I sped up to keep the slush & grim the trucks tires were throwing up and hopefully avoid any rocks making hit on my windshield.
Well…...I made it to 70 miles an hour…...LOADED OLD LOG TRUCK WAS RIGHT ON MY BUMPER…....so I backed off…..moved over to the rumble strip….and let the SPEEDING LOG TRUCK MOVE AWAY….....70 Miles an hour hauling 80,000 pounds of logs….........SO MUCH FOR TRUCK SPEED LIMITS.
THE CAB OF THE LOG TRUCK WAS AT LEAST 30 YEARS OLD AND IF HE HAD TO STOP…....WOULD HAVE TAKEN HIM 1/3 OF MILE TO STOP….....HOW COME THE “GOON SQUAD”........IGNORES THEM….....FINES TOO SMALL TO SLOW THE BIG RIGS DOWN ????? ONLY DUI’S COUNT ON THE UN-WRITTEN BONUS SYSTEM THE COPS KEEP TRACK OF IN THEIR LOG BOOKS.
So…....keep looking at DUI’s…...forget large rigs speeding and wait till they cause a horriffic accident…....70 miles an hour for sure a large rig is plain stupid…......GOON SQUAD…...IGNORES THEM….....WHY ????

How about just installing interlock devices on ALL vehicles. Then everyone would have to use it and No One could drive without it?

Don’t care what it costs. Raise taxes. Do whatever must be done to keep DUI criminals where they belong—institutionalized beginning with a simple drunk tank, education lock-up, and then on to prison for each DUI. Codify the law. Make a second DUI a felony. Prescribe a prison term of not less than 5 years. For the third DUI a mandatory 15 year sentence. For the 4th DUI, life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Draconian ? Yes, indeed. For a DUI involving the death of another make the first one life imprisonment with a mandatory 20 year minimum before the opportunity for parole. A repeat offense taking another persons life give ‘em the death penalty.
