Brett,Good letter. I agree that the public is in need of education on what constitutes a responsible pet
owner. Too many cavalierly view the relationship as unilateral.
When you encounter a loose dog, take them to the shelter. Evidence shows that owners who have
to pay a fine to reclaim their dog are more likely to ensure they remain in their yards. Personally, I
think the fine should be reduced or refunded upon completion of a pet responsibility course.

Yes the public needs education but I am not sure that would solve the problem. My question would be, does the public really care? I don’t think they are stupid, I just think they don’t care! I
am always stopping for strays everywhere! What do dog owners think is going to happen when
you never pay any attention to them, leave them outside 24 hours a day in 12 degrees (or 60),
never take them for walks(or once a week and you’ve done your dute?)...why in the world do
you have them! My dogs (3) are walked twice a day and are family oriented and respectful.
They are so loyal I can (forget) leave the garage door open (only way out) all day and they will
not leave or wander…it has happened more than once! When i walk my dogs (off leash in a
safe place) they always have their eyes or ears on me, they will not leave ME! I have always
had dogs like this..why? Because I CARE ABOUT THEM! They KNOW THE DIFFERENCE!
Please take care of your animals and they will take care of you.

BTW I do not go to dogparks nor do I live in Whitefish. My dogs are under my control and are rightly disciplined if they do not listen. It is part of caring. I do not want them hurt and I am
always aware of their personalities.

I agree with the author on the irresponsible dog owners in Whitefish. Since i only recentlymoved to Whitefish i haven’t witness all the the writer has. But as I was walking with my dog
and a non dog owner friend on the Whitefish trail system today. My friend was commenting on how
many people have dogs and don’t clean up after them. These irresponsible people give good dog
owners a bad name. The trail head has poop bags for people to clean up after their dogs. But,
what do these slobs do but let their dogs poop right at the beginning of the trail and not clean
it up. And even when they do put the poop in the bag they leave it on the trail for the next
person to pick up or NOT. Please people pick up after your dogs, so we all can continue to use
the trail system and not get shut out, because of a couple of slobs can’t pick up after their
animals.

Yesterday I learned of TWO really sweet dogs that died on Mt. Hwy 35 because the OWNERS DID NOT CARE ENOUGH TO TAKE CARE OF THEM PROPERLY!! What is the matter with
people? Why do you have dogs if you refuse to take care of them????
