Bad idea! The coal is crappy, high sodium content which can’t be burned in conventional power plants and has a limited market. The state will get about $1 per ton. Thousands of acres of Montana will be stripped bare. The coal-to-liquids plant will never happen. The railroad will cost around $1 billion and will likely need some of your tax dollars. It will destroy hundreds of acres of ranch land, increase sediment loads in the Tongue River, cross many public roads, create air and noise pollution from 5-7 trains per day. It will affect threatened and endangered species and ruin historical and cultural sites in the Tongue River valley. The railroad will go through the $25 million Miles City fish hatchery which has the only rearing facilities for the endangered Pallid Sturgeon in the U.S. Finally, the railroad will mostly be used to open up new markets for Wyoming coal from which Montana gets no benefit.
