I agree with you for the most part, except for you’re totally off base on one huge point - There is
NOTHING more important in life than football, especially Montana Grizzlies Football. rooaaaarrrrrrr!!!!!

Why not try a really radical approach?....There’s more to a university than football!

Why is football, why are football coaches placed on this special pedestal of importance and
leadership? Why has all sense of proportionality regarding the relative importance of winning
ball games compared to academic achievement in say science departments been thrown out the door?

Oh that’s right. Football players are Real Men with pretty cheerleaders dancing wildly to their
brawny exploits, while scientists are just boring nerds of peripheral import for a university’s
popular image. Doesn’t this whole issue tell us something about misplaced priorities? About the
disgraceful failure in properly addressing, and truly esteeming the Academic Ethos which account
for a university’s reputation in the international academic community?

This could be done e.g. by the university leadership doing much more to promote academic
achievement. Imagine if the university poured as much effort and resources into say a science
department as does into the football program. What a revolutionary thought for an American
academic institution!

Of course the blame cannot be placed just on the university leadership. Moreover, at fault is
really our popular culture, which places such a premium on these transient distractions. As a
culture we seem to remain mired in a high school mentality and just refuse to graduate.

Academic achievement is hard to find when one plays a sport in college. The hours one
has to put into any type of practice then game time…..grades suffer.
I went to college & worked 65 hours a week (nights) in a factory…and my ex-wife always got
fun out of my 2.12 GPA…..with those hours….punching a time clock….hard to make time for
sleep, much less study….now, figure that college athletic sports take the same kind of time
consuming hours…..getting a C or 2.0 is not easy.
My main gripe with college sports ARE THE vast number of players with
TATTOOS….costing large sums of $$$....yet , they play sports on a “free ride” via signing
on to play some sport….and then get the INK….to match any pro sport.?????

“Up with Montana Boys”  Come on Man!  The Griz and Cats are the reason the Libs get to have
such a fine institution to preach the liberal sermon to our young people.  With out the game
these liberal college new age preachers would have to sit in dark holes and talk to each other.
Sorry if you want the podium, you have to have the Football.  These young people are only
practicing what you preach, are they not?
