Comments on: New Barkus Judge Not Expected Until Next Week
Let’s be civil.
The Flathead Beacon encourages vigorous discussion and lively debate, but we will delete comments that attack other readers, make accusations we can’t verify, stray too far off topic, criticize local businesses (call them if you have a problem), convict someone of a crime, use profanity or are simply judged to be in bad taste. We don’t always have someone moderating comments, so we ask for your help: If you see a comment that violates these ground rules, or you simply deem it offensive, please e-mail webmaster [at] flatheadbeacon.com.

The views expressed in the comments section do not reflect those of the Beacon.

READERS RATED THIS COMMENT:

Stadler joined other local judges in stepping down from the matter. All cited a conflict of interest because they had worked with Barkus on matters affecting the courts.

I’‘m always a bit suspicious when members of one branch of government (legistature)(judicial)(executive) get close with partners in another branch. They should keep their distance and avoid having dealings with each other that create a conflict of interest.

For instance this should have been a conflict in my thinking; Minimum sentencing. The judge can say his hands are tied by legislation and he must give the “legislated” minimum sentence.  I used to think sentencing was up to the judge.
