If there are two people in a room and one of them has a gun, they are not equal. The one with the gun has all the “rights”, even the right to decide “life and death”. The Constitution says all “men” are created equal. It puts the rest of us in the position of having to get a gun so we can maintain our equality.

I am very tired of Gun Owners demanding their rights to guns. I don’t want to live on this level. It’s time this county looked at this issues realistically.

Assault weapons…..came from the assault like in Army Assult weapons that have made it into the sporting goods market.
If I lived in any large city in the USA….I’d be against them too. Crime in large cities is rampant for sure. Why…cause many people have lost hope of doing better. They drop out of school, play worthless sports (basketball), can’t read, can’t talk better than a 4th grader, have lots of tattos, and using a gun is their only answer.
There are many loopholes in the current gun laws…...like for mentally ill people from one state to another state…....get what you want. If one can get a fake ID for Social Security or a state drivers license and the FEDS can’t control that simply problem…...how are more restrictions going to help.????

As for me….on assault weapons…...BAN the multi-magazine Army look alike multi-shot rifles in the BIG CITIES…..let the crooks drive to a small town…....where it “should” be harder to get a gun of any kind from a normal gun shop keeper. Also…..in closing the USA is one of the largest SELLERS of weapons in the world…..military weapons sold to SO-SO governments just to make some wacko dictator happy for that month. Did you see the weapons for sale in the Afgan area on TV last week…...lots of stolen loot for sale out in the open air markets over there….....the latest in technology for sale to people on the street in the Afgan area.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi will be well remembered for many issue, when she come up for re-election?

The Senators involved in the killing of E-Verify are using the excuse that funding was removed because, it was holding up the enactment of the Stimulus package. Compared to the other provisions, E-Verify was hardly what you could call pork?  Sen. Harry Reid, Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s credence just doesn’t wash? It was a secret deliberate, treacherous act insisted upon by the business communities.

Even though the Stimulus was crammed with earmarks, they zeroed in on the the amendment that Sen. Sessions tried to bring to the floor.  It’s obvious to most Americans that the 50 Democrats had no intentions of allowing E-Verify to stay in place. Cannot even imagine the livid expressions when these legislators, found out it was still funded until September.  The special interest lobby must have been equally furious.

Time THE PEOPLE set these good-for-nothings right and demand a—PERMANENT law.  If our politicians really wanted to hunt down millions of illegal foreign nationals being hired by unscrupulous employers, they would have enacted E-Verify.  E-Verify would give Immigration enforcement sharp teeth? Who do these politicians think they work for, when 10 million American are jobless?

Thousands of Americans have called Washington at: 202-224-3121 President Obama Switchboard: 202-456-1414/  The facts at JUDICIALWATCH, NUMBERSUSA, CAPSWEB.

Canada might be a really good option for you to research and even move too.  They are more stringent on their gun laws and here is a newsflash for you… If a person wants to take a life, they have many other options in doing so other than firearms.  It is easy to blame guns for the ills of criminals instead of enforcing the laws that are currently on the books already.

Bill, I don’t share your optimism about Obama being unlikely to reinstate the Assault Weapons Ban. In fact I suspect he has told his A.G. Erick Holder to expand the former AWB to include many more firearms. For evidence of this, look at what Secretary of State Hilary Clinton said just today in Mexico. She declared that we in the U.S. share responsibility for Mexico’s drug war violence because U.S. made assault weapons are crossing the border into Mexico to support Mexico’s crime wave. So, according to Hilary, it’s our fault.

Obama himself said: “That’s part of what’s financing their operations. That’s part of what’s arming them. That’s what makes them so dangerous. And this is something that we take very seriously and we’re going to continue to work on diligently in the months to come.”

littlehawk12:  You missed my point. I believe Obama and Hilary use the argument that “Mexico’s guns are coming from the U.S.” to try to justify placing more restrictions on the production and sale of guns IN the U.S. It doesn’t matter where the guns are made, and I suspect their claim is really a lot of nonsense. Drug cartels can buy their weapons by the thousands directly from the manufacturer. Obama and Hilary’s position is merely another excuse to further restrict firearms in the U.S.  Anyone who doesn’t believe our government can easily disarm all Americans in short order, should think again. How useful will your guns be if you can no longer buy bullets, or the powder and primers to reload your own. Think about it. One undeniable fact about the threat of AWB reinstatement is the increase in not only firearms (as Wild Bill noted) but also the sales of ammunition.  Go into any gun shop in the Flathead Valley (for that matter, anywhere in the state) or sporting goods section of your local Wal-Mart and you will see bare ammo shelves, or at the very least, shelves with ammunition from not so popular calibers, and not a whole lot of that.  The number of concealed weapon permits have skyrocketed in the last 12 months alone.  Can you see this and tell me that there is trust in the government not to reinstate the AWB from progunners?  I think not.
Kate, pro-gun lobbys are not hiding behind anything.  We have lots and lots of statistics that prove beyond a doubt that there is no significant increase in gun-related violent crime, let alone accidental deaths where a firearm is involved, but where there are restrictive gun laws, the crime rate is the highest in the country.  Case in point:  Washington, DC (Wild Bill even mentioned this one in the article, if you even read it).  Now let’s take this further and talk about a little town in Georgia that requires a firearm in each home BY LAW.  This little town has the lowest crime rate in the nation…why?  Because no criminal in his right mind would try to break in any house in that town and risk getting shot!!

One thing Wild Bill didn’t go into was H.R. 45, also known as “Blair Holt’s Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act.”  This particular measure calls for a prohibitively restrictive licensing and registration scheme of ALL firearms, sold or unsold, but that is only the tip of the iceberg.  Fortunately, this measure has no co-sponsors, so it will in all likelihood fall by the political wayside, but that could certainly change if the political winds were to blow towards favoring it.  For now, this may not get any attention at all in the light of all the financial scandal and economic upheaval the country is going through right now (props for Wild Bill noticing this one).

Regarding a shortage of ammo in the store, even law enforcement agencies have had a difficult time finding enough small arms ammo for there agency needs. This shortage began occurring about 8 or 9 years ago. I’m not sure if the war in Iraq was the reason (a popular belief back then), or if restrictions may have been placed on companies producing the ammo. It would be interesting to know if retailers are still having trouble acquiring adequate quantities to stock their shelves.

Rawhide, as far as I know, the situation has gone from bad to worse on small arms ammo - even 22 LR is in short supply!!  There was even a shortage of Form 4473 due to firearms demand - now ATF has approved an e-copy of the form available only to FFL holders/dealers.  I think there were a combination of reasons affecting ammo supply - rumors that DOD was buying up all of the 7.62x39 for use by Iraqi forces, to suppressing sales of used .223 military brass (which has since been lifted).  I really don’t see the situation improving, at least in the long term.

NO president or other politician will dictate to me what type of weapon might be available including an assault rifle to do such a task. Obama didn’t put his life on the line for the safety of all others while traveling through this airport as I and my colleages did, so he doesn’t have the right to tell me what or what I cannot use to defend this country or the public’s safety in times of extreme circumstances.
I didn’t see Obama’s name in the roll calls of WW1, WW2, the Korean conflict, Vietnam, Desert Storm/Desert Shield, or the Iraqi conflict (my apologies if I missed anyone else) so I doubt very seriously he doesn’t know what its like to try and defend this country’s interests like many other of us “mere citizens”. I have a question for you, Kate, and if you would, please answer. Do know how to properly operate a gun? Have you ever held a gun?

It has been my observation that the vast majority of those for gun control, actually know very little about them. Perhaps you could get someone to teach you. I have never met anyone who knows how to properly operate a gun say “Oh my God, this thing scares the hell out of me!

You reminded us that “all men were created equal”. I totally agree, but some people, although created equal turn bad. And, I will guarantee you, bad people can find a gun if they want one. If I ever find myself in a life threatening situation with someone holding a gun, I do want to be on an at least an equal level.

Recent local headlines have been about several tragic automobile accidents. Perhaps we should ban cars. Another example; advocates against gambling would like to see casinos outlawed. Well, what’s the difference? If a person is obese and has a problem with overeating, then maybe we should close down all of the restaurants. Hopefully you get the point.

I think you were supportive of gun rights but I just wanted to set you straight on your ‘full auto’ comment.  Full auto weapons are already very heavily regulated, must be purchased at great expense (~$10,000+), and cannot be made from converted semi-auto weapons.  They must be original manufactured full-auto and if memory serves, made before 1980-something (therefore of limited supply).

The rifles under threat of a renewed ban are semi-auto only.  One pull of the trigger, one shot only.  They shoot various calibers that are also used in bolt-action, lever action and non-military looking semi-autos.  The difference is *cosmetic*.  They may be black, they may have a pistol grip (which Harry Reid laughably said made them more dangerous because they could be fired from the hip—try it sometimes, it’s almost impossible to hit anything), and yes, they have detachable magazines.

Let’s debunk the high capacity magazine thing too.  I guess the argument against hi-cap mags is that a criminal or crazy can kill more people more quickly with 30 rounds in his rifle as opposed to 10.  In a free state like Montana, it would probably make little difference since likely someone carrying would try to stop them.  If this happened in a place like California or in a place in Montana that prevents carry, then they would be free to kill until the police arrive 10+ minutes later.  I can tell you that in ten minutes anyone can fire many hundreds of rounds, changing 10 round magazines all the while.  Hell, without anyone else armed to stop them, they could even stop to reload magazines.

I support HB228, the NRA, and the 2nd.

I guess your assumption is that they were never exposed to the liberal indoctrination of our ‘education’ systems as opposed to those who are educated but didn’t drink the Kool-Aid.  I have a very good job and a degree (summa cum laude).  If you grow tired of the debate and the ‘tireless phrases’, don’t step up to the podium.  If you want to keep debating, try using facts.

I will pass the word on to them !!!  They love their constitution, and have sworn the oath to uphold it, as all do that join the armed forces.  This was their second tour of Iraq.
Some are never grateful for what another sacrafices for them, they only take and ask for more….. But that is alright Ryan, we do not pick and choose which American recieves what right, they are ours by birth, and protected by those that so choose to defend it !

Oh good!  We didn’t have to wait long for an example.
Name calling =“Typical liberal elitist attitude”
overused phrases = “didn’t drink the Kool-Aid”

I love a good debate, but only with someone who has an original idea.  My favorite phrase=
“Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.
Abraham Lincoln
16th president of US (1809 - 1865) “

Now there’s one you don’t see on here everyday.

Emily:  Your comment was one of the smarter ones I’ve read today. The purpose of education is (should be) to teach one how to think objectively and analytically. Not much of what you read in the paper or see on TV will meet those standards. We should all strive to be independent thinkers, not just followers.

Its amazing to read comments from the likes of people with names like ‘Emily’ and ‘Eric’...I’m sure their intelligence will take them far in this life. Unfortunately we have to respect their opinions right or wrong, but we don’t have to give in to their way of thinking.
LOVE the folks in Montana and the Flathead Valley region. I’m not from there but I can tell you for a fact that the spirit and hospitality of these western Americans are the BEST that I’ve encountered in 44 years of traveling and vacationing in your state. Not a day goes by that I wouldn’t ever consider giving my life for yours in such a beautiful geographical area.
GOD BLESS AMERICA AND MONTANA TOO..!!

Hey cowgirl… it’s funny how everyone assumes that women who carry guns are always boot wearing she-men.  If I am wearing a dress and can’t use my ankle holster, you better believe I’ve got my .38 in my Gucci purse!  I will continue to do so no matter what law changes the Obama administration makes.  Who knows if/when I will run into “undesirables” and have to defend myself, my property, or my family.

I also think it is funny how many (not all) liberals assume people who carry guns or who are gun right advocates are uneducated.  I’ve got a bachelor’s degree from a large university, I served my country in the armed forces for over 6 years, and now I work in a nice office building with a great view making enough money to own a house in Whitefish.  Believe me, I’m not trying to toot my own horn.  It took a lot of hard work to get where I am.  I just want to illustrate that I’ve done all the above things and have owned semi-automatic guns the entire time.

The founding fathers of this nation didn’t make provisions in the Bill of Rights regarding gun ownership for hunters and sportsmen. Those provisions were made because our founding fathers had the wisdom and foresight to realize that ANY government could become corrupt and tyrannical, including ours!

The second amendment is what allows the people to protect themselves from a criminal, tyrannical government. The second amendment is what protects all of the other amendments Your rights don’t come from a piece of paper, they come from a higher power. The government was created to serve the interests of the people. NOT the other way around. This country was born from revolution, and from rule by consent. NO ONE should EVER allow the government to take away their rights.

Benjamin Franklin once said “anyone that gives up their liberty for their security, will soon have neither, and deserves neither.” Anyone that thinks that a tyrannical government could NEVER come into being in America, is living in a delusional fantasy land. Our founding fathers, and our fore fathers have warned us over and over that the biggest threat to us would not come from an outside threat, but from within.

Frankly, I’m a lot more fearful of the criminals in Washington D.C. then I will ever be of the criminals on the streets

No American citizen should be allowed to own an assault weapon.

This is not about the right to bear arms which is lawful and supportable. It is about not allowing civilians to carry and use military weapons.

This is the kind of argument that is self defeating, Abbama.  Until you define what an “assault weapon” is, your argument has absolutely no basis at all.

A few years ago, the news created near hysteria about shark attacks through sensational reporting.  It was later shown that there were actually fewer shark attacks that year than previous years.  During that time, people in land locked states that never set foot in the ocean were distraught about the events.  They would then decide to put their diabetes out of their minds by getting in their car and driving to McDonald’s while talking on the cell phone to their sister in Florida.  On the way home, they thought they might as well stop off at the bar for a few drinks and cigarettes.

This admittedly fictitious scenario is here only to frame some 2005 CDC statistics on causes of death which can be viewed here: http://www.disastercenter.com/cdc/Number of Deaths 113 Causes 2005.html

Every time our country stands in the path of danger an instinct seems to summon her finest first. Those who truley understand her. When freedom shivers in the cold shadow of true peril, it is always the patriots who first hear the call.
when loss of liberty is looming, as it is now, the sirens sound first in the hearts of freedoms vanguards. The smoke in the air of our concord bridges, and pearl harbors is always smelled first by the farmers. who come from their simple homes to find the fire and fight. Because they know that sacrad stuff resides in that wooden stock and blued steel. Something that gives the most common man the most uncommon of freedoms. When ordinary hands can posses such and extraordinary instrument that symbolizes the full measure of human dignity and liberty.
Thats why those five words issue and irresistible call to us all, and we must !
SO…...... as we set out this year to defeat the divisive focres that would take freedom away…. I want to say those fighting words for everyone within the sound of my voice, to hear and to heed….
FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS !!!
