Back younder in the mid 60’s, I was on a real hot shot crew in Nothern California…and I can say from my own experience….knowing that a retardent bomber was on the way….sure picked up the hand troops on the fires, I was on… that numbered over 100 fires from small to super large.
Course, the slurry bombers in those days were….B-17’s, and PBY’s mostly….but they had darn good pilots that could hit a nail on the head….slower than the ones now…which is not bad.
The value on having air support on the way or about there is a morral booster for sure with the ground troops.
And, the groups fighting to stop the slurry bombers…..I am sure will call for HELP….air support quickly….if their summer cabin/retirement home is threatened…..only then will the city dwellers back off some. And, if cost of actual fire fighting is not bad enough…..wait till a lot of homes/place burn while some Californian protests in court…..keep the tabs rising.
