Reader Poll
Let’s be civil.
The Flathead Beacon encourages vigorous discussion and lively debate, but we will delete comments that attack other readers, make accusations we can’t verify, stray too far off topic, criticize local businesses (call them if you have a problem), convict someone of a crime, use profanity or are simply judged to be in bad taste. We don’t always have someone moderating comments, so we ask for your help: If you see a comment that violates these ground rules, or you simply deem it offensive, please e-mail webmaster [at] flatheadbeacon.com.

This question doesn’t seem very clear. Are you asking if we support street vendors physically outside of Events, or temporally outside of events? I’m assuming you mean when events aren’t going on, but I can see people being confused.

Will non property tax paying carts be allowed to compete directly with businesses like the Red Caboose?

The cart has no land, no tax, no utilities, no restrooms, etc. Low overhead.

If all food businesses downtown are closed, I say yes, If not and the carts are cutting deeply into the brick and mortar businesses, that’s a tricky question.

The customers will want cart foods but shouldn’t we be protecting existing businesses too?

When the Red Caboose is/was open 24X7…............. hmmmm.

This is why we have such a wise city council.

Damn! Tough crowd here. I write I’m not sure how to answer the question and I still get a thumbs down.

It is tough. I support free enterprise and I support those that are fixed traditional businesses. I’m not sure how this should go.

Maybe I should give myself a thumbs down too.

Who ever gave the TD, I’m curious, what do you think is the answer to this question? Watch out, this may just be a trick so I can give you the TD too.

MT:

I gave you that TD.

You said: “This is why we have such a wise city council.”

I took issue with that line (only) because it seems to me to be absolutely foolish for any city council to think that their communities might have actually have stumbled on to a unique problem of governance.

This issue has lots of precedence.  If you are in the business of ordinance it would behoove you to, at a minimum, do a simple internet search on the issues at hand to see if/what other communities have done *B4* passing an ordinance.

Seems the solution taken tends to be to mediate an agreement between the parties after the fact.

TD- 2 TD+  (The cake is a lie.)
