Great. Now the state Governor & legislature can decrease our state income tax. Ever notice anyone with over 14,000 or so is in the highest tax bracket?

Interesting how a governor who’s a member of the “tax and spend” democratic party (at least that’s how Fox Noise and the Daily Disappoinment describe democrats) runs a surplus, and the republican president runs up the biggest deficit in the history of the republic!

Easy to figure - nothing was done to reduce taxes after the last billion dollar surplus.

So President Bush should raise taxes to cover the deficit? Let’s see, that works out to what--tripling the current tax base?

What has that got to do with our state “budget”? Remember 2 years ago. Our legislature and governor had the opportunity to do actual reform of taxes. They didn’t. We got a token “rebate” [taxable], and the “budget” was increased. What could have been done is lowering the tax rate, and holding spending down. Didn’t happen. Let’s not become another California with out of control spending increases.

Give it back to its rightful owner’s; the TAXPAYER!

It has nothing to do with the state budget. It refers to your statement: “Great. Now the governor and legislature can reduce our state income taxes.” That’s the point you made Carl. If you conclude that a surplus means giving it back to the taxpayer, then conversely taxes would be raised when there’s a deficit --which we now have thanks to a republican president and his party.
I’m willing to give the democrats a chance to right the fiasco of our current national deficit. They did it once (Clinton), maybe they can do it again. The republicans haven’t, even though they controlled both the senate and the congress for eight years. And before you launch into a tirade about Ron Paul, we get it. We should vote for him, he’s the best, yada-yada-yada-yada. We’ve heard it, ad nauseum. Try a new approach, perhaps we won’t automatically tune you out.

Roark, give it up, we will not see a dime of that surplus. Fiscal responsibility is the reason Montana has it; the state will need it to weather the coming storm that is the 2008 recession.

As for the feds - out of control. throwing money every where. Which would be better - A dem pres and dem congress free to do what ever they wish? or - a split fed gov’t? Don’t know. I think it was Ben Franklin that said [something like] - no man’s life or property are safe when congress is in session [?] or something akin to that. What I’m hoping for is that Montana will be fiscally responsible with my tax money. [county also]. p.s. anybody know that quote?

The surplus is not because of fiscal responsibility, but because tax payments have exceeded government expenditures. But so what?-it’s still the taxpayers money to begin with and any excess should, by moral right, be given back to its proper owners.
