As a member of the Flathead Chapter of Backcountry Horsemen, it is a pleasure to read an article such as this to refresh my understanding of the simple principals that serve as the marching orders for this great organization.

And with all the land the horsemen have to ride they still continue to fight to close trails down for four wheelers.

I would not say close to motorized, I have a quad and also horses, our group of bch wants to keep the trails open for all to use not just horses or hikers or motorized or even mt bikes.. but there are some simple rules to be followed and if all are polite there is no problem if you don’t know the trail rules then ask. I know this may sound bad but horses have the right of way on trails at all times then comes pedestrians then mt. bikes then motorized. All need to step off to the down hill side of the trail and shut it off to let a horse pass, this is for safety reasons not personal ones. My horses don’t fear motorized vehicles but others do and please if you are hiking don’t hide in the bushes say hi to the rider before they get to you or if you are coming up from behind well before you are in kicking range. and let them know you need to pass and most will let you as soon as the find a safe place to step off the trail.  we have no say in land closure to motorized use that is up to the land owner. and they do close land to motorized because of the following reasons: trashing the land, illegal fire wood cutting, drunk driving, drugs, riding on private land with out permission, etc. if it closes it is because of a few bad eggs doing these things the motorized groups need to stop the stupid from wrecking it for the good ones. and get involved with cleaning up messes, doing volunteer work for DNR, learning the leave no trace methods for motorized. instead of leaving parts of bikes in the woods and tearing up camps and leaving trash. stop the bad eggs from wrecking it for you instead of pointing fingers and complaining.
