Comments on: Transportation Department Tackles Rural Fatality Rates
Let’s be civil. The Flathead Beacon encourages vigorous discussion and lively debate, but we will delete comments that attack other readers, make accusations we can’t verify, stray too far off topic, criticize local businesses (call them if you have a problem), convict someone of a crime, use profanity or are simply judged to be in bad taste. We don’t always have someone moderating comments, so we ask for your help: If you see a comment that violates these ground rules, or you simply deem it offensive, please e-mail editor [at] flatheadbeacon.com. The views expressed in the comments section do not reflect those of the Beacon.

It’s ridiculous that the Republican’s can’t get past there noses on passing a seat belt law. The Montana GOP doesn’t have a clue. If you ever watched the senate hearing on seat belts and saw the video and tears in Jim Lynch’s eyes you would know how insane it is to not wear one. Every year the Dem’s bring this up and even with strong pressure from both sides of the aisle, and bi-partisan lobbying a couple of Flathead nimrods hold it up. I think it was Verdell last time.

Agreed…seatbelt law is the single most-important factor here. In the meantime, those who don’t wear seatbelts are simply “self-cleaning” the gene pool. Do you really need a law to force you to put on the seatbelt??
A greater degree of seriousness in the minds of law enforcement, legislators and judges regarding driving while impaired would help here as well. Of course that’ll take time since Barkus will need to put in exemptions for boating on the rocks. Hey, there’s a new name for a cocktail to be served at bars and resaraunts in the Flathead. In dis-honor of Barkus, “I’ll have a boat on the rocks”
