Comments on: Two New Trails Built at Herron Park

Thanks Matt and FtBT for everything you’re doing to increase and improve nearby recreational opportunities for the people of Flathead Valley! Can’t wait to see, and use, more additions at Herron Park.

I’d like to remind fellow trail users that these two new trails are very muddy right now so please wait until they dry out before getting on them with bikes or horses. These trails will be a fantastic addition to the FTBT trail complex—let’s respect the hard work of those who built them by not damaging them with ruts and holes.

While it is certainly open to mountain bikes, the Direct Route Trail is open to all users including hikers and equestrians too. New signs and maps are in the works, but are still a few weeks or more out.
We’re aiming to have the Family Trail at least open by May 15th, but it will still need some polishing in places. We are requesting and able to accept trails volunteers M-F May 10th-14th.
National Trails day is Saturday, June 5th and volunteers are also needed to help us finish up. rsvp with matt.ftbt@gmail.com

First, some clarifications. Rails to Trails has done a wonderful job on the Kila trail but is not involved with Foys to Blacktail or Herron Park. The state trails (RTP) grant awarded to the county for trail building is for $13,000 rather than $10,000.
My hat is off to Matt Brake, the trail boss of the project. Please tell him thanks and buy him a beer, or lunch. This project would not have happened or the final product be as great without his stubborn determination to do an excellent job. Thank You Matt.
Finally, the trails are still under construction and are very muddy. Come see them but be gentle. Many thanks to local businesses that contributed: Forestoration (excavator and expertise), Western States Caterpillar (excavator), United Rental (vibra-packer), Midway Rental (roller packer), Cenex (200 pounds of grass seed). And all the volunteers that have slogged in the mud with shovels to make this happen.

I was just up there, and no matter how many times I hike up there, I still find a new view. Great work!

Clarifications have been made to the story. Thanks to those who pointed them out.
