Elections even out city council’s balance of liberal and conservative

Russ, why don’t you stick to a subject you know something about.  You know nothing about Whitefish or what the citizens of Whitefish want.  You should be applauding the high voter turnout and the high level of active citizen participation in our city government - these are typically thought of as good things in a city, unless you are a poor loser.

Happily, most commenters on this site don’t think in such narrow terms.

READERS RATED THIS COMMENT:

JB, are you trying to tell me that WF was once a conservative town?  You don’t have 32 places to get an alcoholic drink without having a few partiers on board.  This place has had a ski town core for over 60 years, the demographic shift to conservative christians in the southern part of this valley does not correlate to WF, plain and simple.  So to answer your question, yes all right wing hackers should just clear out to Kalispell, where unending belief in god and country is the only prerequisite for being considered a leader.

So just go back to your ten commandments display and pray that all us heathens will be saved by your self serving icon.

My mistake - in your case, T-Bone, it would be partisan glasses, in which case everyone else doesn’t exist.  Real generous of you to be so thoughtful about those who don’t share your view of politics.

I am new to this, let me get this correct (I was afraid to say “right”).  When the Beacon says, “Let’s be civil.” it means slap and name-call, left is right, right is wrong and if you ski Whitfish is the best place to be even if injustice, immorality, graft, political manipulation, runs rampant. Paying traffic tickets and other city “taxes’ even if not justified or legal is ok. I am scratching my head- think I will go back to backrupted California- nothing is any different here.

Caleb -

There is no need to go back to California to witness the growth of government at the expense of freedom. I happens with regularity under the guise of saving the environment. Just watch and you will see the growing influence of the idealism that says, “we need to give away control of all that we hold dear, or we will wreck it”.

Eileen, I understand what you are saying, I have traveled to 34 of the contiguous states of this once great nation. I served in the military and stand by my oath today. I am shocked by the apathy and materialism that is prevalent nationwide. My children are endentured servants of a too big government and no stateman/or stateswoman to stand and accomplish anything because the masses want more handouts!

I like Whitefish.  The restaurants are much better than K-town and the bars serve a stiff drink.  If those pesky cops would just go home a 10 pm and leave the crowds alone, I would move there.  I don’t ski, but I think the town throws several great parties and I attend them regularly.  HOWEVER, the place is losing it’s charm with more and more newcomers and there awful “let’s make it just like the place we moved from” ideas.

Only in NW Montana is planning, accepting the truths about growth, understanding there are limits to private property rights, protecting a special place for the benefit of all .......“left”

Russ and Eileen may think they have the right to put a nuke waste dump and 3 hog farms next to my house, but I have the right to vote for reasonable policies that hold their lunacy at bay.  I don’t think its in any way “kommie” to try and protect the value of my property from their actions.

Extreme is often “left.” Certain parts of the Critical Area Ordinance were extreme. Were they “left?” Probably more than “right.” Re-read your comment. Your extreme comments compromise your own credibility.

It’s when the pendulum swings more to the middle (not comments like 3 hog farms and nuke waste dumps) that we all begin to respect the opinions of others. Respect does not mean caving. It’s an opinion not a dictate.  You are damaging your own position.  e pluribus unum

ummmmm….thanks so much for rap on the fingers from your little ruler but…..the private property bunch (Russ is their anointed leader) literally believe that they have the right to do ANYTHING with their property. As far as I know they would belive in the right for 4 hog farms…..they reguarly point out that its theirs to do with what they want.

Nah nah nah….nah naaaah nah!

Owners! Make sure you have covenants. We don’t need the government to tell us how to protect ourselves when the provisions are in place for us to be our own guardians.

Your hog farms remind me of the owner that bought a ranch and not to the liking of his neighbors, built a loud shooting range. It lowered the quality life and at the same time, lowered the property values. The case is far from over. Hogs stink and nukes make ya glow. Constant gunfire is not nice either. Sometimes we need laws for when common sense runs out.

fourweight-

The point of protecting the rights of property owners is not to allow uses that confront existing zoning. My position is that our constitutional right to own and enjoy private property should be respected and laws protecting those rights should be upheld.

I watched the battle waged in King County, Washington with great interest when a critical area law was passed restricting rural property owners to the allowable use of only 35% of their property. They were required to set aside 65% as a natural buffer which meant no clearing, grading, landscaping, gardening or keeping of livestock or poultry. Folks who owned 2.5 acre parcels with the idea of a family garden found themselves looking at a little over 3/4 ac. and if they had a long driveway that was included in the computation. When they added in the area for the drain field and well, there sometimes was no land to use at all.

I contributed to the lawsuit against that ordinance as I did in Carrol County, MD. where ICLEI/Agenda 21 was defeated

It was beaten back thanks to the efforts citizens made to educate folks about the unforeseen problems that can occur from hastily created laws that sound good to those who often don’t look beyond ballot rhetoric.

I think you might benefit by visiting the City Data website to see what is going on in other rural areas where local governments are following the guidelines of the U.N. Agenda 21 to take away rights of usage from property owners. You might be surprised to find that some of the reasons you enjoy the property you chose for your home may be in jeopardy if the push for global governance continues unabated.

reasonable limits on private property rights - just like all other rights, they are not absolute

strong planning and strategic vision that recognizes we have a special place that can’t be duplicated.  Allowing a few to ruin it for all is beyond stupid.

Recognizing that no private company is perfect and no government is perfect, but reasonalble governement is the very thing that lets us all exist in peace - I personally like government and all the things it affords us (I am also for everyone who debates this taking a trip to liberia for a couple weeks to get a bit of perspective)

lastly I am for calling out the crazies in this valley - UN conspiracy theories, OBama birth certificate nut bags, half-baked anectdotal bumper stickers, socialist alarmist talk, failure to recognize that the Tea Party has been completely co-opted to do the bidding for big corps and billionaires….......I am for labeling all of this as absolute insanity, and calling all of those who idenfity with any of this as equally insane.

Now hurry up and erase this before the NSA, the UN and a yet to be detirmined third conspiratorial agency kidnap us all and impregnate us with the DNA of Karl Marx

Who do you see trying to ruin it?

RE: “I personally like government and all the things it affords us”

What [exactly] do you think government affords us?  You seem to be saying we owe our existence and rights to the government rather than the other way around as is stated in our constitution.
