This story has an odor to it.  Sounds to me dude capped the bear while it was coming in and got chewed up for a bit before the sow finally bled out.  The bear left and was set to charge him again makes no sense, especially in consideration try working a handgun with devastating injury to your jaw, back etc.  I bet his vision was so blurred he couldn’t even tell the sky was blue.  Should have shot the sow with a .375 cal H&H Magnum or at least a .338.  Shooting a charging grizzly with a handgun is certainly not wise.  Also, btw, unless you are assigned to SWAT, the training the average cop gets is way inadequate for real world survival.  How many cops have lost their lives in a shoot out with a stationary paper target?

Iam very happy he is ok.I would of died of heart failure from fear.But I do know in bear country ,don’t walk threw tall grass or bushy areas.
