Whitefish and Columbia Falls Extend Soccer Dominance

COLUMBIA FALLS – Since soccer became a Class A sport in 2001, Columbia Falls and Whitefish have won six out of seven state championships for boys and three out of seven for girls. It’s a regional dominance nearly unheard of in Montana high school athletics.

The years when a team other than Columbia Falls or Whitefish won the state championship, boys or girls, the two Flathead schools were still usually at the top of the standings. So as the 2008 fall soccer season kicks off, all eyes are on the Wildcats and Bulldogs again.

In Year Two of Split, Glacier and Flathead Take to Gridiron

The Flathead Braves aren’t worried about scoring as long as their whole team is intact. But this is football and injuries happen. So head coach Russell McCarvel will be carefully monitoring the team’s depth chart, which features only 64 players this year, a decent turnout but half as many as before Kalispell’s high school split.

“If we don’t get any injuries we’ll be OK,” McCarvel said. “But injuries with our depth could really hurt.”

Matt Triplett and Lexy Rianda are typical teenagers with very untypical weekend hobbies.

When the school week’s over, Triplett likes to hop on the back of an angry, one-ton bull. Rianda prefers to wrestle down goats and ride horses at breakneck speed. They both understand where their sport stands in the pantheon of high school competition.

Flathead’s Osweiler Commits to ASU Football

Flathead High School junior Brock Osweiler, who made a verbal commitment to play basketball at Gonzaga after his freshman season, has now changed his mind and committed to playing football at Arizona State.

"It's just the right decision at the right time," Osweiler said Thursday.

Osweiler committed to the Sun Devils and coach Dennis Erickson on Wednesday and told Gonzaga his plans the same day.

Charlie Dotson represents Flathead High School with three different pairs of shoes. In the fall he wears cleats as he carries the football across the pitch and in the winter his sneakers pound the hardwood of the basketball court. With the arrival of spring, Dotson is lacing up his orange and black track shoes.
