The Alpine Theatre Project was founded in Whitefish in 2004, and since then its members have played numerous roles, both on and off the stage. But after nearly a decade of scrambling to keep everything running smoothly, the founding members and the board of directors have decided it is time for a change.

That shift, which is termed “ATP 2.0” by the staff, will occur largely behind the scenes at the theater company, impacting the administrative structure and the strategies for public outreach.

Huckleberry Cheesecake Flapjacks | Courtesy photo

The calendar may say spring has arrived, but summer is still months away. Among my favorite things about summer in Montana are those lovely, scrumptious berries called huckleberries!

When it’s time to forage for those sweet berries, I consistently find myself traversing up hillsides I normally wouldn’t be able to climb, ignoring the threat of bears and other wildlife. It’s amazing the lengths we will go to keep our huckleberry spots a secret so we can stockpile jugs full when they are at the peak of ripeness.

I love huckleberries, so I enter baking competitions and, just last year, I took home my first blue ribbon at Huckleberry Days in Whitefish.

Rheannon is one of two winners in the local Texaco Country Showdown to move onto the state finals. - Lido Vizzutti | Flathead Beacon

When Rheannon Rusaw walked into Colter Coffee last week, she looked every bit the country star she hopes to be, wearing blue jeans, plenty of silver jewelry, a long braid and a big, friendly smile.

But image isn’t everything in country music, especially in a place like Northwest Montana. To make it here singers must have the musical chops to back up the cowboy hat and boots, and, if the recent Texaco Country Showdown was any indication, Rusaw has plenty of talent to back up her dreams.

In Spain, dinner is typically served much later than here in America, sometimes as late as 9 or 10 at night.

In the hours leading up to their main meal of the evening, many Spaniards take part in the long-standing tradition of tapas.

While tapas are considered a type of cuisine, it is also a style of eating which usually takes place in bars or pubs and is done standing or casually seated.

Small bites of food that accompany your after-work cocktail, tapas cover a wide range of ingredients and preparations with a unique Spanish flare.

Billy Thompson leans on a pool table at the Great Northern Bar and Grill in Whitefish. Thompson, who is helping produce an independent feature film, “The Thin Line,” said one of the scenes takes place around the pool tables. - Lido Vizzutti | Flathead Beacon

There are innumerable tasks and processes that go into successfully creating a feature film, and many take endurance and patience to figure out. For Billy Thompson, a longtime member of the Alpine Theatre Project, finding the location to film his brother’s independent movie was a matter of kismet.

Thompson and his brothers and a cousin will all convene in Whitefish to film “The Thin Line” from April 22 to May 10. The film has been a long time in the making, Thompson said in an interview last week, starting as a screenplay his brother Neil Thompson wrote and shopped around to various companies in California.

My story is not like the stories of most culinary students. I didn’t have a real passion for cooking as I grew up.

I always thought I wanted to be a teacher, so I pursued elementary education and taught Sunday school.

It was not until I was more than halfway finished with my teaching education that I realized it wasn’t for me.

As many artists will attest, self-expression is a lifelong endeavor. It begins at an early age and continues to grow as the artist learns and adapts to the world around them.

On April 4, the public is invited to join local high school students on their artistic journey at the Hockaday Museum of Art’s New Artists Show. The show includes pieces from students throughout the valley, who will show what they’ve learned through various types of media.

The show runs until May 4, and there is an opening reception on April 11.

Pacific Rim Pork | Contributed Photo

While spring has its many great qualities, it can often be a gray and somewhat dreary time of year.

Sometimes the only hope for a tropical getaway is related to food. As I stare into the refrigerator I see one ingredient. It sparks thoughts of a remote, warm place, a place of sand, surf and Mai Tais.

I’m staring at a jar of homemade Liliko’i jam. It was a Christmas gift straight from the islands of Hawaii and up to this point I haven’t been quite sure what to do with it. Liliko’i is a passion fruit cultivated commercially or growing natively in Hawaii and many other warmer, frost-free climates around the globe. It is a small, round fruit with a juicy interior and numerous seeds. Its flesh is a good source of vitamin C, beta carotene, potassium and dietary fiber.
