Bromgard Lawsuit

Yellowstone County Wins Legal Defense Case Against Bromgard

BILLINGS – A federal appeals court ruled Thursday that Yellowstone County should not be held responsible for the legal defense provided to a former Billings man who spent 15 years in prison for a crime he did not commit.

A three-judge panel with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued the decision in the appeal by Jimmy Ray Bromgard, who says he was wrongly convicted in 1987 of raping an 8-year-old girl because of poor representation from his court-appointed attorney. He was exonerated in 2002 by DNA testing.

Last week at the Dance Arts Center in Kalispell, a Snow Queen, an Arabian Princess, a Sugar Plum Fairy and a Dew Drop Fairy gathered together to dance.

They gabbed and giggled as they put on their pink shoes, their smiles only disappearing when the music started and the serious and beautiful business of ballet began.

Dancing can be a stress-inducing endeavor for many people, but the four principals of the Northwest Ballet School and Company make it look effortless and graceful. These girls – McKenzie Javorka, Shelby Deaton, Celia Roessmann and Meredith Stanfill – have each worked for more thana decade to dance in the main roles in this year’s performance of the Nutcracker.

Will Barnhart trained for two years before he made his mixed martial arts debut. He wanted to be ready, to be good. Even if it was his first fight, he didn’t want to look like a beginner.

After cruising to a victory, Barnhart’s patience appears to be paying dividends. Now he’ll get to show his skills off to a hometown Kalispell crowd. Barnhart is one of four fighters from Kalispell’s Straight Blast Gym of Montana scheduled to participate in Fight Force’s Kalispell Kombat at the Majestic Valley Arena on Nov. 20. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the event begins at 7:30 p.m.

At the end of November, downtown Kalispell will turn the page to a new chapter. And the words will be gone.

After 42 years, Books West is closing its doors. As one of the few remaining independent bookstores in the valley, it’s a blow to those who still believe a book purchased from your neighbor is more satisfying than one bought from strangers on the Internet. Along with a smattering of used and niche bookstores, there will now only be one independent distributor left in the valley selling new titles, Bookworks in Whitefish.

When the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was signed into law in February, national and state officials promised a life raft of job creation to help soften the blow of the economic recession.

In Flathead County, an area plagued with high unemployment, the question is whether the stimulus is fulfilling that promise. According to the federal stimulus tracking Web site, 134.1 full-time jobs have been created or saved in Flathead County. But that number may be inaccurate, according to at least one stimulus fund recipient.
