When the Beacon posted a short Web story noting that Kalispell mayor Pam Kennedy had endorsed Sen. Hillary Clinton for president it quickly drew a plethora of opinions, which ranged from support to utter outrage. And while it is open to debate whether her endorsement matters, the city she represents certainly could – especially if Clinton wants to pull off a major upset in Montana’s upcoming primary.Given the figures you stated, I’m suspect your analysis will prove to be spot on. But still, it baffles me the way working class folks often vote against their own best interest. Bill Clinton, among other things was known for his allegiance to corporate America and globalization, both of which serve to increase profits for the already wealthy at the expense of the poor. That Hillary and McCain would follow more or less the same path is a given. Come on Flatheads, who would Jesus vote for? While he might have a beer with Hillary, her past is shady enough and her connections with big money too extensive to fathom His support. Finally, if you are contemplating voting against your fears, shame on you. This year, the cycle will be broken, with or without the Flatheads consent. Join the winning team, dare to dream just a little.
Comment By Cris, 5-22-08Markos Moulitsas (of Daily Kos) frequently claims that the only endorsements that really matter are those that are attached to a “machine”—that is, an established political network—and mayors usually have the most well-oiled machines. If that’s true, and if the Flathead is as important as you suggest, then Mayor Kennedy may be the determining factor in giving Senator Clinton the majority of Montana’s delegates.
Not to mention that Clinton has one of Montana’s most influential unelected personalities on board in Walter Schweitzer. I suspect Clinton will finish a lot stronger in Montana than most people expect.
