On Sunday, March 14, Hunter Education Instructor Pat McVay celebrated his 90th birthday and certified a new class of Hunter Education graduates. The students helped McVay celebrate his birthday at the end of the week-long Hunter Education course that McVay teaches at his home east of Kalispell.
McVay has been teaching Hunter Education for over 53 years. He taught the state’s first course in 1957. He was the first to introduce a field portion to the course, conducting live-firing of .22 rifles and shotguns. McVay has also coordinated the 4-H Shooting Sports program for many years.
Still an avid hunter, McVay has no plans to retire from Hunter Education. He’s already started making up student information packets for spring of 2011.
