The 80-acre Lindbergh Lake Fire burning near Condon was 20 percent contained Tuesday evening as cooler temperatures, higher humidity and a smattering of rain aided firefighters.
“We’ve had several challenges but everything seems to be falling into place, so far,” Cindy Super, public information officer with Department of Natural Resources and Conservation public, said in a prepared statement.
The presence of the threatened plant species, Water Howellia, has limited dipping sources, she said, and the extreme terrain near the area has also proven problematic. But she didn’t expect the blaze to grow overnight.
The Lindbergh Lake Fire was reported Monday afternoon and quickly grew on the southeastern side of the lake. The area surrounding Lindbergh Lake is closed, including trails to Crystal Lake.
Crews from Ronan, Browning and Missoula are working the blaze.
