It is easy to become overwhelmed by the amount of media coverage dedicated to the devastation and relief efforts in Haiti following the earthquake last week. I believe, however, these are times where the power and importance of a still image stands out. The still image lets us pause and reflect – outside of the constant noise and motion – on the events, allowing us to inhale the moments with a critical and empathetic eye.
Here are a few comprehensive slide shows published containing images from some of the nation's best – some Pulitzer Prize-winning – photographers. Some images in the galleries may be disturbing because of their graphic content.
The New York Times gallery “
Haiti’s Earthquake: A Photo Gallery”.
The
Washington Post’s “
Major earthquake hits Haiti”.
An audio slide show titled “
So many people who need help” by Carolyn Cole for the
The Los Angeles Times.
A fascinating Q&A with
The New York Times photographer Damon Winter titled “
On Assignment: Where is the Help?” on the Times’ Lens blog.
The Miami Herald’s “
Photo Galleries – Haiti.”
