One of my favorite fall traditions is Oktoberfest - a festival that celebrates beer and sauerkraut? Yes, please! - and we've got a great one here in Whitefish.
Last year's Great Northwest Oktoberfest was a pretty good time, and one of the best parts (in my opinion) was the dachshund races. I can't really explain why it's so fun to watch; the races only last about two seconds, but they are hilarious. The owners and the dogs were all good sports, typically wearing matching outfits and entertaining a huge crowd of families and beer garden attendees alike.
I got an email this week asking for help rounding up some doxies for the race, because very few have signed up. Apparently, pre-registration is required, meaning no on-site registration at the event. The races take place on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 3 p.m. The entry fee is $3 per dog, which also gets the racer's team of two humans (one to hold the collar at the start and one at the finish line) into the Oktoberfest Big Top tent.
