Playoffs start this Saturday across the state

Columbia Falls and Whitefish head to the playoffs

Columbia Falls' fortunes in the playoffs will depend a good deal on the performance of these three young men, their backfield cohort who isn't in the photo (John Woody, #24), and the line that opens holes for them. For those of you wondering what's up with the Class A high school football playoffs, Columbia Falls will be hosting Corvallis (6-3) this Saturday at 1pm and Whitefish will visit Dillon (6-2), also at 1pm.

After a victory over Butte Central earlier this season, Whitefish High School senior Dusty Beck told his teammates, “Boys – I think we can beat anyone here on out.”

This is the kind of mental toughness Beck, a linebacker, brings to the Bulldogs, and he backs up his words with physicality.

WHITEFISH – By the end of fall, Drew Coco will be wrapping up arguably the greatest cross country season in Class A history. He’s undefeated on the year and it’s clear nobody will catch him. He’s left with setting personal goals for himself: a state record and breaking the 15-minute barrier. The school records have already fallen.

COLUMBIA FALLS – Since soccer became a Class A sport in 2001, Columbia Falls and Whitefish have won six out of seven state championships for boys and three out of seven for girls. It’s a regional dominance nearly unheard of in Montana high school athletics.

The years when a team other than Columbia Falls or Whitefish won the state championship, boys or girls, the two Flathead schools were still usually at the top of the standings. So as the 2008 fall soccer season kicks off, all eyes are on the Wildcats and Bulldogs again.
