Browning, Blackfeet Utility Dispute Goes to Court

By Beacon Staff

GREAT FALLS — Browning officials say Blackfeet tribal leaders are mailing false billing notices to residents in an attempt to take over the towns’ water, sewer and garbage services.

The town filed a complaint in U.S. District Court alleging fraud and racketeering by the Blackfeet Tribal Business Council.

The complaint alleges that a tribal attorney stole the town’s utility customer lists.

The Great Falls Tribune reports town officials are seeking a court order to stop the tribal council from billing customers and interfering with its operations.

The complaint says the tribal council began sending notices to residents last year telling them to send their sewer and water payments to a tribal-owned utility company.

The tribal council has not yet responded to the complaint filed April 9.
